Most visited Mud volcanoes are located in Alat, part of the Gobustan state preserve. The only way from Gobustan preserve to Mud volcano is not a comfortable offroad way. That’s why the fastest form of transport between Gobustan and Mud volcano is by taxi — it takes about 30 minutes and 25-50 manats per car (depends on your negotiation skills). If you share the ride with other people, it will cost around 10 manats per person. You should have no trouble finding a taxi, onward from the Gobustan museum to Mud volcano.
Mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan belong to a number of geological wonders of nature and are widespread on the Apsheron Peninsula, in Gobustan, in the southeast of the Shirvan Plain and on the islands of the Baku Archipelago. Mud volcanoes are found in the areas with sandy-clay soil which are rich in oil and gas deposits. Azerbaijan is the richest country in the world for the diversity and distribution of mud volcanoes. All known types of mud volcanoes in the world are represented in Azerbaijan. The country is a real natural fund or laboratory of mud volcanoes in the world. Most of the volcanoes located in Azerbaijan are active, but there are extinct, underwater and island volcanoes in the Caspian Sea.

Here is the whole field of small conical craters that erupt into thick, cold, gray mud, while creating lunar landscapes. Mud from these volcanoes contains valuable chemicals that are used in the treatment of various diseases and in cosmetology. Such volcanoes as Lokbatan, Galmas, Toragai, Airantokan, Boyuk Kenizdag, and Dashgil included a list of protected natural monuments. 23 volcanoes have received the status of protected areas. People called mud volcanoes by different names according to the external properties of these volcanoes, for example, “pilpilya” (terrace), Yanardag (burning mountain), Bozdag (Gray mountain) “gaynacha” (hot water).
