The Museum of Contemporary Art opened in Baku in 2009, and the first lady of the country, Mehriban Aliyeva, initiated its creation. One of the main principles of the museum is freedom and the absence of rigidly defined frameworks in the expositions. It is also emphasized by the architecture of the building: the absence of corners, open passages, different angles of inclination of the walls. All this brings to mind the constant movement: at least, this is how the author of the architectural project, the creator of the exhibitions and the curator of the collection, the Azerbaijani artist Altai Sadikh-Zadeh, conceived it. Even the two floors of the construction itself seem to be a solid space connected by the “Forgotten Ladder”, which can also be called an art object.
The free and open concept of the museum allows its visitors to get acquainted with the most diverse and unusual works. These are innovative works by Azerbaijani artists of the 1960-1970s. and together with them – paintings of the great modern masters, such as Picasso, Dali, Chagall.
The core of the museum collection is a collection of the best paintings and sculptures of Azerbaijani avant-garde artists from the second half of the 20th century up to the present.
The core of the museum collection is a collection of the best paintings and sculptures of Azerbaijani avant-garde artists from the second half of the 20th century up to the present. Currently, the museum has about 800 exhibits. These are Azerbaijani representatives of the direction of figurative art (Huseyn Aliyev, Nadir Kasumov, Tair Salakhov, Omar Eldarov) and the avant-garde (Ashraf Murad, Eldar Mamedov, Mir Nadir Zeynalov, Altai Sadikh-zade).
The white building of the museum can already be considered a work of art in the style of an avant-garde. The exposition of the museum covers not only the museum halls as such but also outside. This even applies to the art cafe and restaurant. In addition, the museum has an exhibition of children’s art, a video hall, a separate space for solo exhibitions, a library and a shop.
Two separate exhibition halls are occupied by the Metropolis Gallery, where a rather extensive collection of works by contemporary authors that can be bought is represented.
One of the parts of the museum exposition is dedicated to the “unknown” art, which appeared in the country in Soviet times. If it were not for the work of the museum, the names presented here might have been forgotten.
