Nizami Ganjavi Mausoleum, Juma Mosque and its madrasah, Sheikh Ibrahim Mausoleum, Sherefkhanly and Shahseven Mosques, Great Bridge and Small Bridge built on the Ganjachay (XII century), Imamzade with blue cupola of glazed brick, very beautiful ancient City bathhouses, Juma Mosque, Khan Bagi, Bottle house.
One of the main attractions of the city is the 17th century Shah Abbas (Juma mosque), with two tall minarets and a dome with interesting decoration. The red-brick building is illuminated through beautiful panels of stained glass (Shebeke). There are also a few others less appealing mosques. Being in Gandja you can’t escape visitation to the mausoleum of the great poet with a marble monument to the poet nearby with height of 20 meters. Behind it are cast in metal figures depicting scenes from Nizami poems. The two-storied but rather modest caravanserai can be found in the vicinity of Hotel Ganja. There are museums, art gallery, theater of poetry named after Nizami. Nearby there is a colorful mosaic, one more tribute to Great Nizami.
Another landmark is the first parliament of the short lived ‘Azerbaijan Democratic Republic’; originally it was the city hall and is now used as an agricultural school. Near the parliament is the large and pleasant city park, comprising the remains of the 16th century fortress walls and a chaykhana.
The baths, situated close to the Abbas mosque have striking colors and attractive domes, but are not very old. Behind the baths there is the 19th century grave of Javad Khan, who was ruler of Sheki in period when Ganja was independent khanate.
A local oddity is the bottle house, a two-storey building decorated with about 50.000 glass bottles! The decorations contain a portrait of one of family members, missing since WWII. About 15 km northeast of Ganja, after the village of Aznixi you’ll find the Imamzade. This is a beautiful brick building with blue domes that was built as the mausoleum of the 8th century Imam Bagira ibn Ibrahim. The date of the original building is uncertain, and the current design results mostly from a 19th century reconstruction.
In Khan Bagi (Khan Garden) your walking tour starts. It is regarded as one of the largest parks in the Caucasus. Its construction began in 1700. It has rare kinds of plants brought from various parts of the world. Under Javad Khan, the park was renovated and trees were planted here. After that, the park was called the Khan Garden in his honor.
